I had the idea to do a combination of the Wasserleitungsweg (water pipe path) in Höllental and then return over the mountain (Knofeleben and Eng) to the train station. It is a very nice alpine route.
- Wasserleitungsweg (Water pipe path)
- Höllental (Hell Valley)
- Knofeleben (wild garlic meadow) and Friedrich Haller Haus
- Alpine Route in Rax/Schneeberg area
We went with the train to Payerbach. There the bus was already waiting which took us to the entrance of the Höllental (hell valley). We left the bus at the cablecar station. The path follows the valley.
Unfortunately there is road in the valley so you hear that noise. But the path is very nice. It is a historical path following the pipe which brings the water from the mountains to Vienna (Wasserleitungsweg). The river there is the Schwarza.
The path ended in Kaiserbrunn. There is a museum.
After a break we left the valley and went up a steep trail to the Knofeleben. This is not an easy path, very alpine… maybe better to go up than down – but also harder to go up when it is hot. But very nice views along the way.
Finally wer arrived at the hut at Knofeleben. It is a new and modern hut because the old one burnt down.
Near the hut there is a lot of wild garlic (which gave Knofeleben it’s name or better it’s smell). It was delicious we picked up some for the bread that we brought.
It is possible to continue to Krummbachstein from there and have a real summit. But this would have been too much for us…
After having lunch we went down another path which should bring us back to the train station where we changed to the bus. It is also a very nice path and much easier then the one we took before. It was used to transport the wood from the forest.
We arrived in Schneedörfel so we were almost at the train station.
There are some nice buildings it is a nice place to do some strolling.
Well this was also a hard hike maybe just doing the Wasserleitungsweg is sufficient for most people but anyways it was a good combination and a more alpine tour.
