Unfortunately I had to cancel the hike to Hainburg which was scheduled for Sunday because weather was to be very bad. But on Saturday weather was still very good. I found a nice and simple route from Ried to Troppberg and to Purkersdorf in the Viennese Woods (Wienerwald). It is cool that so many people joined even though I had announced this change on short notice.

A description of part of the route can be found on derstandard.at:
We met at Hütteldorf which is an S-Bahn and subway station (U4). From there we took bus 447 (direction Kronstein) until Ried am Riederberg / Gasthof Schmied which was our starting point.
There was more snow in this area than I had expected. In the beginning there was some snow in areas with lots of shade but later on Troppberg we were walking almost all the time on snow. Luckily there was not much ice but it was also possible to walk on the side of the path or off the path when there was ice – most of the time.
Anyways… after starting at the bus station we arrived at some abbey ruins. It is a very interesting place and good for some pictures.
Right after the abbey there is a nice spring. The path was with some mud and hard snow but we managed to make progress without much hassle. There was also some wood work going on in the forest and some tree branches blocked the path but this was also not really a problem.
In the beginning we did not meet any other hikers, only in the end on Troppberg. But we saw that the path was used.
Before Troppberg we arrived at a nice big meadow where we had to make a break… we played some Frisbee and enjoyed the sun.
There were different options to go to Troppberg but I followed the route I had planned with my GPS. The snow was getting more and more and in the end we walked on snow. We even saw some marks of cross-country skis. I think this is a good area for doing this.
Finally we arrived at Troppberg. I was surprised that the look-out tower was open but it was. It is a very high tower with a great view. It was sunny but unfortunately there was a little bit of fog in the distance so not a really perfectly clear view to Schneeberg, Vienna, Tulln/danube, etc.
We had a break at the summit and Ida gave us some dancing lessons which was a lot of fun.
We continued our way to Purkersdorf. We followed a road but there was also a hiking path but it was more or less parallel to the road. The road was easier because no snow and mud there. But still this part was a little bit more boring until we arrived in Purkersdorf.
We thought about going to Rudolfshöhe as well but locals told us that the roundtrip would take 2,5 hours so we decided not to do it because it would get dark. We just continued to Purkersdorf Sanatorium which is the city border S-Bahn-Station so we do not have to pay for an extra ticket to Vienna. Thanks to Ida who showed us this way and managed it somehow that we arrived at the station 2 minutes before the train arrived 😉
It was a great hike near Vienna and good to spend the beautiful sunny day outside before weather got worse. Many thanks to everybody who participated.

Unfortunately I had to cancel the hike on Sunday because weather will be very bad. But on Saturday weather is still very nice. So I will to do a simple hike. I found a nice route from Ried to Purkersdorf. Who has time on Saturday as well?
There are some abbey ruins along the way and a great view from Troppberg. There is no restaurant, only in the end, so bring something for lunch.
We meet at 9.10 in Hütteldorf at bus station of bus 447 (direction Kronstein b.Sieghartskirchen Wendestelle). The bus leaves at 9.20 and arrives in Ried at 10. Be there ahead of time to find the bus station. The bus is 4.40 Euro.
To return there is a S-Bahn from Purkersdorf (we could buy a group ticket if we are some people… without group discount or Vorteilscard it is 2.20 Euro). The hike is 13.27km. If we still have energy (and time) we can go to Rudolfshöhe as well.
