I wanted to do some hiking on Sunday. There was a nice path to Peilstein from Weissenbach. (I usually go there from Maria Reisenmarkt but wanted to try this way…) If you don’t know Peilstein this is the top spot for sports climbing near Vienna. There is a nice self service restaurant on top. There is also a castle in the end (Neuhaus).
Here is a description of the route in german:
We startet our hike at Weissenbach/Triesting. To go there we took the train in the direction to Wr. Neustadt but changed in Leobersdorf to another train. Weissenbach is the last stop of the latter one.
We first followed the bike path alongside the Triesting river but soon left the road. The route is basically a very big circle (there is a quicker way to go to Peilstein but we took that route when returning).
In the forest we found some Bärlauch (Wild garlic). It was still very small but quite delicious. The Bärlauch can be recognized because one side is shiny and the other side is matt. Also the leaves come out as single ones of the soil. Also the edge of the leaf is straight and not jagged. Very typical is the smell or taste like garlic.
The path is interesting it is very diverse sometimes in the forest and sometimes in the open.
When we came to a clearing we could see Peilstein. We made a break there. Along the path we still found some patches of snow (and on Peilstein there was snow continously).
Later we arrived at Hafnerberg. It has a nice church.
After that we went to Holzschlag. This was already the ascent to the Peilstein mountain. Along the path there is a lot of information about rock climbing. Peilstein is the top spot for sports climbing near Vienna.
The ascent to Peilstein was little bit steep but not very long and soon we arrived at the top. We were already hungry so we where happy to try the delicious meals there.
We made a short visit to the summit cross. It is very close to the climbing wall which is very big.
We continued our way to Neuhaus. There was another highlight, the Neuhaus castle.
Now we had to make a decision. We just missed a train and the next one would be in 2 hours. So my idea was to go to the next train station which is Pottenstein. We talked to some locals and they told us it would be more than 2 hours to go there. So we decided just to go to Weissenbach instead. We still had some time but we found a good way to spend it. There was a school in the forest. There we played some Activity. I think this was the best part of the whole hike so sometimes it is good to wait…
We went downhill to the train. Luckily the train was coming earlier so it was possible to wait inside. Some of us went to the forest to pick some more wild garlic. We exchanged some recipes on the way back (Bärlauchstrudel, Bärlach-Pesto, etc.). This was really a funny hike!!!

Meeting point: 8.15 Wien Hauptbahnhof room/space with many ticket machines
Train: 08.26-9.42 (change in Leobersdorf) – Steig 1 (R 2315 / R 6573)
Train from Weissenbach: 16.17, 18.17, 19.47 (realistically we would take the one at 18.17 or 19.47)
The idea is to use the Einfach-Raus-Ticket. So I would need some people to make this possible, also to make this not too complicated meet all at Hauptbahnhof. We buy the ticket at 8.15 so please don’t come later.
The ticket is 36 Euro for up to 5 people for the whole day. If we are are more than 5 (or 10/15/etc.) people I can buy an extra single ticket (with Vorteilscard). So it should be not more than ~10 Euro per person. The ticket means we have to go together and also return together.
Bring some food for a break near Hafnerberg but we can also buy something at Peilstein but there is also a nice meadow to relax.
